Thanks for the advice, geek, I’m heading over to an Apple store now. I have a question for you though… When you say you’ve done this process a hundred times, do you mean the calling process, or the website process? I think they are different… The AT&T rep said “Well, if you had called us instead of done it online…” which sounds crazy but I think they do it for security, or so they implied.

Josh,

Sorry to hear you’ve had a problem with your upgrade. I assure you that you should not have to buy a new SIM card. I’ve done this on iPads for about 100 users at our company and not encountered a single issue like you’re reporting. I would encourage you to go into an Apple store or contact Apple regarding this if you don’t get resolution through AT&T.

I’ve just gotten off the phone with AT&T because my OLD iPad wouldn’t let me set up a new account after activating my new iPad with my unlimited plan. I did the website process of giving AT&T my new iPad’s IMEI and ICCID numbers. It’s true, setting up the new one is no problem, but they said that once the old SIM is “deactivated” it CANNOT be “reactivated” and that I would have to buy a new SIM for $25(!) So, anyone new coming to this thread – better just swap the SIM cards, or call AT&T *before* you start.

Just an FYI, have completed the upgrade on multiple iPads at this point, I have not had to restart any of them for these changes to take effect.

You need to shut down the iPads and reboot them in order for the settings to take effect.
